AFS is committed to helping young people to go abroad regardless of their financial situation. That’s why AFS works with corporate and community sponsors and individual donors to help finance AFS programs through full and partial scholarships.

5 AFS bursaries; 5 lives changed
  • Complete bursaries for a year program in 2018
  • AFS Interculture Canada is thrilled to offer the opportunity to five young Canadians to participate in a study abroad program without any participation fees. The five students awarded the bursaries will have the choice to study in Italy, India or Paraguay. They will learn about the local culture and language with their host family, their host school and the friends that they will make from around the globe!To be eligible for this bursary you must :
    •be between the age of 15 and 18 on the day of departure
    •be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
    •be in good health
    •currently be a full-time student and have good results
    •demonstrate financial need
    •be highly motivated to live an intercultural experience of a lifetime

Participants must submit their complete application no later than January 1st 2018

Regular AFS Interculture Cananda Scholarships
  • AFS Interculture Canada gives scholarships up to $5,000 for a year high school program, $4,000 for a semester high school program, $3,000 for a trimester high school program, $1,500 for a summer program and $4,000 for a community service program. Please be advised that the participants for the Sentio and school group programs are not eligible for scholarships.Who can obtain a scholarship?The scholarships are offered to participants registered in an AFS program. The candidates must meet the admission criteria of the host country and have been accepted by AFS Canada. The Participation Agreement must have been signed and returned to the AFS office in Montreal.To be eligible for this bursary you must :
    • Aged between 15 to 18 years old on the day of departure according to the country chosen
    • Present  your  complete  application  file  before  the  scholarships  application  deadline, which is March 1st 2017
    • Enclose a letter explaining why you (the participant) should obtain a grant (max 1 page long)
    • Provide  any  other  documentation  or  information  that  may  influence  the  Selection Committee’s decision.
Barrett Family Foundation Scholarship
  • The Barret Family Foundation Scholarship is open to participant from all part of Canada. Preference will be given to students outside Quebec as only Quebec participants are eligible for the Bourse Jeunesse Quebecoise.To be eligible for this bursary you must :
    • Aged between 15 to 18 years old on the day of departure according to the country chosen
    • Present  your  complete  application  file  before  the  scholarships  application  deadline, which is March 1st 2017
    • Enclose a letter explaining why you (the participant) should obtain a grant (max 1 page long)
    • Provide  any  other  documentation  or  information  that  may  influence  the  Selection Committee’s decision.
The Adventurer Bursary:

Do your friends describe you as adventurous? Are you always eager to try something new? Are you ready to discover a new country and its culture? We have the program for you!
AFS Canada is offering the chance to one lucky participant to spend a school year in a mystery destination!
Instead of choosing your host country, you will apply for the program without knowing where you will go. Participant will find out the destination only after the selection process is completed. The host country will be one of the 50+ AFS partner countries that we work with around the world.
Selection criteria:
• Be between the ages of 15-18 years old on the day of departure
• Be in good health
• Have a strong scholastic record
• Demonstrate your adventurous spirit in a letter of presentation
Details:
• Deadline for application: December 1st, 2017
• Participation fees of $3500 and $3500 in fundraising for the summer 2018 year program departure
• You cannot ask for a grant with this promotion

AFS Centennial Bursary

As a celebration of AFS’ 100th anniversary, we are offering the following bursaries:Criteria for the reduction of $2500:

  • Participate in a year-long program abroad and host a student the year-long program in Canada. 

Criteria for the reduction of $1500

  • Participate a semester-long program and host a student for a year or semester-long program

Please note: Participants may also apply for the regular AFS bursary. The maximum total amount that can be awarded is $5000 for a year program and $4000 for a semester program

For the children of our dedicated volunteers

In an effort to recognize the generous support of our AFS Canada volunteers, we also offer the Centennial grant to the children of our volunteers. A bursary of $2500 for the year program or $1500 for the semester program will be offered to the children of our active volunteers (minimum of 2 years of active service). Please contact us for further information.

*Please note that AFS bursaries cannot be applied to program fees for destinations that are already on promotion

What are my chances of obtaining a grant?

The probability of granting a scholarship is based on the participant’s financial need. AFS is making strenuous efforts to help youths who want to go abroad to fulfill their dreams. To become a beneficiary of our financial support, the candidate must meet the selection criteria.
